Father Matthew
Mr Gnome and I have recently discovered the internet broadcasts of this cheerful, intelligent Anglican cleric from Rye, New York.
This one gives a taste of his thoughtful, attractively untraditional, traditional approach.
Our favourite, however, is his rather brilliant explanation of the Ascension, based on (what else?) the Mary Poppins narrative.

A bit of a ding-dong
Set on the north-eastern corner of Trafalgar Square, St Martin's couldn't be more central - in fact, it's the Queen's parish church.
Mr Gnome popped in yesterday during a brief visit to the capital to admire the recently completed clean-up and refurbishment, which includes a massive below-ground extension to develop the church's work serving London's poorest and most vulnerable inhabitants.
Outside in the square crowds were gathering around a huge temporary stage in readiness for the celebration of London's gay pride weekend. Inside all was classical calm - visually, at least. Up above the bells were tolling - full peal.
A twinkly member of staff updated us entertainingly on the ten-year refurb project.
The verger must have noticed Mr G straining to listen - what with the overhead din of the bells.
'We've got a team of gay bell-ringers visiting today,' he explained. 'They're here for the pride weekend.'
A pause - and then, by a micro-second, he beat Mr Gnome to the only possible comment.
'I guess that gives a whole new meaning to campanology....'

Saturated

Time for a therapeutic visit to Coventry Cathedral where, no matter how dull the weather outside, the great Baptistry window may be relied on to create a soul-charging whoosh of light, colour and glory.
Each pane of John Piper's composition is an exquisite abstract composition in its own right.
The colours are intensely rich, each pane luscious in itself, yet contributing to the totality of the work. Unity and diversity.
As a child I would ask my mother to take off her sapphire engagement ring. I would then hold the stone up to the light and squint through it, drinking in its deep, intense and almost overwhelming blueness.
I can still recall the faint, yearning ache behind the solar plexus that the experience induced.

Good news in a bard place

Big church, packed with people aged from a tiny baby (baptised without a whimper during the service) to a woman of over 100 (I think I heard that correctly.)
Nice mixture of the formal (vestments, white-cassocked servers, trad hymns, vibrant organ) and the informal (teenage singing group, friendly MC-ing from cheerful vicar aided by tip-top radio mike.)
During the service we were invited to take part in an 'activity.'
Not a big fan of audience participation, I nonetheless appreciated the opportunity to jot down a mum-related thought/prayer/thank-you on a small paper flower and later leave it on the altar. As someone with neither parent living , and no children, I was grateful that someone had thought of this simple but effective way of including everyone in the service.
The vicar is Martin Gorick (yes, poor man, it rhymes with Yorick). His talk/sermon was short (hurrah!) and to the point. He spoke affectingly about the 'fathering' and 'mothering' love of God.
And he spoke clearly and simply about the church's 'vision' to be 'bridgebuilders' - to help take God to the community, and the community to God. Sounded like a good concept, to me.
He mentioned the fact that as a church they have adopted three 'values' to help them as they start to build bridges: humility, holiness and hospitality.
Hmm. I think I could start to get excited about that.
Anyway, ten out of ten to the community at HT, S-u-A for a joyful, inclusive, positive experience. Hurrah.
Overseas readers: please don't panic re climate change in UK. Photo was taken in August.

Wise words
Mr Gnome is privileged to have regular contact with the charming and intelligent clergyman featured in this news clip.
Apologies to overseas visitors unaware of recent rumpus following comments by Mr G's lookalike guru, the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Inclusive church
People of all sorts clearly enjoy coming to the church and absorbing its peace - and they are made to feel welcome.
Mr Gnome made a few last min shoppings at the Muji store, source of all sorts of cool household and 'desky' items.
He wishes that the staff serving the HB had been a little more interested in serving the customer - and a little less interested in chatting to one another.
Tsk!
Small note...
Mr G has been in discussion with the HB regarding the content of the blog.
Mr G feels that the time has come to make postings a wee bit more incisive.
He told the HB: 'I'm intrigued by that feisty American adjective "kickass". I'm wondering if, in 2008, my blog should adopt that word as its inspiration....'

Mr G admires vicars with vim...

One of his favourites from that (occasionally) exotic fraternity/sorority is the Rev Steve Tilley.
Original, thoughtful and kind, Mr Tilley offers something rare in today's church: platitude-free ministry.
Mr G is quietly in awe of the Rev Steve, who is an experienced and often inspired (well, he should be, shouldn't he?) blogger. More than that, he's a tip-top writer.
Enter the wholly splendid world of this remarkable gentleman via Mustard Seed Shavings.
Be warned, Mr T occasionally provokes.
But as Mr Gnome remarks: 'And why not? Beige is so, so No...."
